Sterne Agee Maintains “Buy” Rating on Las Vegas Sands; Expects Dividend Increase (LVS)

Sterne Agee announced on Monday that it has maintained a “Buy” rating on resort company Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS).

The firm has reaffirmed a “Buy” rating and $67 price target on LVS. This price target suggests a 12% upside from the stock’s current price of $59.24.

Sterne Agee analyst David Bain commented: “Based on July and August data channel checks and our September forecast, we believe LVS’ Macau division is trending8% to 10% above the Street’s 3Q13 estimate of ~$670m.”

“Before the end of the year, we believe LVS regular dividend will be increased to $1.60+ per annum from $1.40,” he said. “Further, LVS leverage should be ~1.4x by 4Q13 – underutilized, in our view. At that time, 1 additional turn of leverage could add over $4.6b in cash that could be returned to investors in the form of more significant buybacks or a one-time dividend,” the analyst added.

Las Vegas Sands shares were up 46 cents, or 0.78%, during pre-market trading Monday. The stock is up 28% YTD.

BlackBerry's Epic Rise and Fall in 3 Charts

Mired Canadian handset maker BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY  ) officially announced this week what the entire investing community already knew was coming: another absolutely brutal quarter.

The company's name has surfaced in the news on almost a daily basis over the past month, most notably the attempt to find a buyer to take the company private. After having been rumored as the leading candidate to take on this unenviable job, Fairfax Financial agreed to take BlackBerry off the public markets.

However, on this sad occasion (and since chances to cover BlackBerry grow fewer by the day), let's look past the current storylines. I'd like to share three charts that show the rise and fall of this once-great company.

What goes up must come down
It's hard to imagine now, but rewind a few years, and BlackBerry was the toast of the technology landscape.

Led by co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, Research In Motion, as it was known until earlier this year, grew from a popular pager and PDA business into the company that would help drive the smartphone into the mainstream. Its first device with integrated cell-phone capabilities, the BlackBerry 5810, came to market in 2002. Revenue exploded from that point, taking the company on a wild ride with revenue growing from $294 million in 2002 to an all-time high of $19.9 billion in 2011, a truly mind-blowing average annual rate of 52% during this period.

It's easy to overlook this amazing rise, given BlackBerry's recent struggles, but it's worth noting just how amazing BlackBerry's run over that 10-year period truly was. However, no company's reign can last forever.

Revenue growth began its precipitous decline for the first time last year, although it's fair to argue the music stopped years before thanks to Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) iPhone and Google's emerging dominance in the global smartphone space. However, when revenue finally began to decline, it quickly erased many of the hard-fought gains of the past several years in a matter of quarters.

As the passing of time has only confirmed, Apple completely changed the game when it introduced the iPhone in 2007, ushering in now-common features such as app-based software, touchscreen interfaces, and many other features BlackBerry simply wasn't ready to counter. Google's Android came to market the following year, and the two have never looked back. In the second quarter of this year, Android and Apple accounted for 92% of the global smartphone market share, much to BlackBerry's chagrin.

Solid market-share data from several years ago is hard to come by (IDC deletes its data after a few years), but you can certainly understand the dynamic at work here. The key point is that we can see BlackBerry's share of a market -- one that's boomed during this time frame -- slowly, but persistently, trending downward.

It's also worth noting that these market-share figures are also partially influenced by each company's specific smartphone strategy. Google has been able to steal share like no one's business because of the cost advantages it presents to OEMs by offering Android completely open-sourced and basically for free. Its focus is on pushing its search engine and services to as many people as possible.

Apple and BlackBerry, however, rely on an integrated hardware and software strategy. As Apple has proved, this can be an immensely profitable strategy. On the other hand, as BlackBerry has found out, the strategy is almost entirely predicated on consistently rolling out popular devices. Apple has been able to do that, which is why, although its market share has dipped as the market expanded, its profits have are still at all-time highs. Take its most recent sale performances, for instance. In the first weekend of sales of its newest iPhones, Apple was able to sell 9 million units. In its entire quarter, BlackBerry could sell only 3.7 million smartphones.

There are plenty of potential culprits aside from the competition -- perhaps, most crucially, the years of management upheaval and serial delays in bringing the next generation of smartphones to the market. However, the bottom line is that BlackBerry simply lost its lead and never found what it took to recover.

Putting it all together
In the end, what ultimately matters is how shareholders have fared over time. And as with any investment, when someone purchased plays a huge role in determining future returns. However, since we think about investing as a long-term endeavor, let's look at BlackBerry's stock price from the very beginning.

If you somehow had the discipline to buy and hold BlackBerry (again, Research In Motion back then) since it was a newly minted public company in the late '90s, chances are you did pretty well. In fact, over its life as a publicly traded company, it's still managed to outperform the Nasdaq. And while things like the tech bubble and the Great Recession obviously distorted pricing and returns to an extent, it's clear that in the end, BlackBerry simply couldn't keep up in an increasingly mobile world.

The growth chapter for BlackBerry ended long ago. The company is now fighting for its life and seeking to find some, if any, way to extend its life as a major tech company. And as we move into this new chapter of the company's corporate history, it's worth looking back to see just how far BlackBerry has come, and just how much it has fallen.

As Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair summed it up in a recent note to clients: "In the end, though, and this is the end, BlackBerry never did anything well beyond email, and I believe that is why this story is ending."

MidAmerican�� domestic regulated energy interests are consisted of two regulated utility companies serving more than three million retail customers, two interstate natural gas pipeline companies with approximately 16,600 miles of pipeline and a design capacity of approximately 7.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and a 50% interest in electric transmission businesses. Its Great Britain electricity distribution subsidiaries serve about 3.9 million electricity end-users. In addition, MidAmerican�� interests include a diversified portfolio of domestic independent power projects, a hydroelectric facility in the Philippines, the residential real estate brokerage firm in the United States and the residential real estate brokerage franchise network in the United States.

PacifiCorp is a regulated electric utility company, serving regulated retail electric customers in portions of Utah, Oregon, Wyoming, Washington, Idaho and California. The combined service territory�� diverse regional economy ranges from rural, agricultural and mining areas to urban,! manufact! uring and government service centers. As a vertically integrated electric utility, PacifiCorp owns approximately 10,600 net megawatts (MW) of generation capacity.

MidAmerican Energy Company (MEC) is a regulated electric and natural gas utility company, serving regulated retail electric and natural gas customers primarily in Iowa and also in portions of Illinois, South Dakota and Nebraska. MEC has a diverse customer base consisting of urban and rural residential customers and a range of commercial and industrial customers. In addition to retail sales and natural gas transportation, MEC sells regulated electricity principally to markets operated by regional transmission organizations and regulated natural gas to other utilities and market participants on a wholesale basis and sells non-regulated electricity and natural gas services in deregulated markets. As a vertically integrated electric and gas utility, MEC owns approximately 7,400 net megawatts of generation capacity.

The natural gas pipelines consist of Northern Natural Gas Company (Northern Natural) and Kern River Gas Transmission Company (Kern River). Northern Natural is based in Nebraska and owns interstate natural gas pipeline system in the United States reaching from southern Texas to Michigan�� Upper Peninsula. Northern Natural�� pipeline system consists of approximately 14,900 miles of natural gas pipelines. Northern Natural also operates three underground natural gas storage facilities and two liquefied natural gas storage peaking units.

Kern River is based in Utah and owns an interstate natural gas pipeline system that consists of approximately 1,700 miles and extends from supply areas in the Rocky Mountains to consuming markets in Utah, Nevada and California. Kern River transports natural gas for electric utilities and natural gas distribution utilities, major oil and natural gas companies or affiliates of such companies, electricity generating companies, energy marketing and trading companies, a! nd financ! ial institutions. The Great Britain utilities consist of Northern Powergrid (Northeast) Limited (Northern Powergrid (Northeast)) and Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) plc (Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire)), which own a substantial Great Britain electricity distribution network that delivers electricity to end-users in northeast England in an area covering approximately 10,000 square miles. The distribution companies primarily charge supply companies regulated tariffs for the use of electrical infrastructure. MidAmerican also owns HomeServices of America, Inc. (HomeServices), a full-service residential real estate brokerage firm in the United States. HomeServices offers integrated real estate services, including mortgage originations and mortgage banking primarily through joint ventures, title and closing services, property and casualty insurance, home warranties, relocation services and other home-related services. It operates under 27 residential real estate brand names with over 16,000 sales agents and in nearly 375 brokerage offices in 21 states.

Manufacturing, Service and Retailing Businesses

Berkshire�� numerous and diverse manufacturing, service and retailing businesses. Marmon Holdings, Inc. (Marmon) consists of approximately 140 manufacturing and service businesses that operate independently within 11 diverse business sectors. These sectors are distribution services, electrical and plumbing products, industrial products, crane services, engineered wire and cable, transportation services and engineered products, food service equipment, highway technologies, retail home improvement products, retail store fixtures, and water treatment.

Distribution Services supplies specialty metal pipe and tubing, bar and sheet products to markets, including construction, industrial, aerospace and many others. Electrical and Plumbing Products is engaged in the distribution, supplying electrical building wire primarily for residential and commercial construction, and copper tube for th! e plumbin! g, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration and industrial markets, through the wholesale channel. Industrial Products consists of metal fasteners and fastener coatings for the construction, industrial and other markets, gloves for industrial markets, portable lighting equipment for mining and safety markets, overhead electrification equipment for mass transit systems, custom-machined aluminum and brass forgings for the construction, energy, recreation and other industries, brass fittings and valves for commercial and industrial applications, and drawn aluminum tubing and extruded aluminum shapes for the construction, automotive, appliance, medical and other markets.

Crane Services is engaged in providing the leasing and operation of mobile cranes primarily to the energy, mining and petrochemical markets. Engineered Wire and Cable is engaged in supplying electrical and electronic wire and cable for energy related markets and other industries. Transportation Services and Engineered Products includes manufacturing, leasing and maintenance of railroad tank cars, leasing of intermodal tank containers, in-plant rail services, manufacturing of bi-modal railcar movers, wheel, axle and gear sets for light rail transit and gear products for locomotives, manufacturing of steel tank heads, and services, equipment and technology for processing and distributing sulfur.

Food Service Equipment is engaged in supplying commercial food preparation equipment for restaurants and shopping carts for retail stores. Highway Technologies primarily serve the heavy-duty highway transportation industry with trailers, fifth wheel coupling devices and undercarriage products, such as brake parts and suspension systems, and also serving the light vehicle aftermarket with clutches and related products. Retail Home Improvement Products is engaged in supplying electrical and plumbing products through the home center channel. Retail Store Fixtures provides shelving systems, other merchandising di! splays an! d related services for retail stores, as well as work and garden gloves sold at retail. Water Treatment includes residential water softening, purification and refrigeration filtration systems, treatment systems for industrial markets including power generation, oil and gas, chemical, and pulp and paper, gear drives for irrigation systems and cooling towers, and air-cooled heat exchangers.

McLane Company, Inc. (McLane) provides wholesale distribution and logistics services in all 50 states and internationally in Brazil to customers that include convenience stores, discount retailers, wholesale clubs, drug stores, military bases, quick service restaurants and casual dining restaurants. Operations include grocery distribution, foodservice distribution, beverage distribution, international logistics and software development. McLane�� foodservice distribution unit, based in Carrollton, Texas, focuses on serving the quick service restaurant industry. Operations are conducted through 18 facilities in 16 states. The foodservice distribution unit services more than 19,000 chain restaurants nationwide.

Other Manufacturing, Other Service and Retailing Businesses

Berkshire�� apparel manufacturing businesses include manufacturers of a range of clothing and footwear. Businesses engaged in the manufacture and distribution of clothing products include Fruit of the Loom, Inc. (Fruit), Russell Brands, LLC (Russell), Vanity Fair Brands, LP (VFB), Garan and Fechheimer Brothers. Berkshire�� footwear businesses include H.H. Brown Shoe Group, Justin Brands and Brooks Sports. Fruit, Russell and VFB (together FOL) is primarily a vertically integrated manufacturer and distributor of basic apparel, underwear and athletic apparel and products. Products, under the Fruit of the Loom and JERZEES labels are primarily sold in the mass merchandise and wholesale markets. In the VFB product line, Vassarette, Bestform and Curvation are sold in the mass merchandise market, while Vanity Fair and! Lily of ! France products are sold in the mid-tier chains and department stores. FOL also markets and sells athletic uniforms, apparel, sports equipment and balls to team dealers; college licensed tee shirts and fleecewear to college bookstores and mid-tier merchants; and athletic apparel, sports equipment and balls to sporting goods retailers under the Russell Athletic and Spalding brands. Additionally, Spalding markets and sells balls in the mass merchandise market and dollar store channels.

Garan designs, manufactures, imports and sells apparel primarily for children, including boys, girls, toddlers and infants. Products are sold under its own trademark Garanimals and private labels of its customers. Garan also licenses its registered trademark Garanimals to independent third parties. Garan conducts its business through operating subsidiaries located in the United States, Central America and Asia. Fechheimer Brothers manufactures, distributes and sells uniforms, principally for the public service and safety markets, including police, fire, postal and military markets. Fechheimer Brothers is based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Justin Brands and H.H. Brown Shoe Group manufacture and distribute work, rugged outdoor and casual shoes and western-style footwear under a number of brand names, including Justin, Tony Lama, Nocona, Chippewa, Carolina, Sofft, Double-H Boots, Eurosoft, and Softspots. Acme Building Brands (Acme) manufactures and distributes clay bricks (Acme Brick and Jenkins Brick), concrete block (Featherlite) and cut limestone (Texas Quarries). In addition, Acme distributes a range of other building products of other manufacturers, including glass block, floor and wall tile, wood flooring and other masonry products. Acme also sells ceramic floor and wall tile, as well as marble, granite and other stones through its subsidiary, American Tile and Stone. Benjamin Moore & Co. (Benjamin Moore) is a formulator, manufacturer and retailer of a range of architectural coatings, available principa! lly in th! e United States and Canada. Products include water-thinnable and solvent-thinnable general purpose coatings (paints, stains and clear finishes) for use by the general public, contractors and industrial and commercial users. Products are marketed under various registered brand names, including Regal, Super Spec, MoorGard, Aura, Nattura, ben, Coronado, Insl-x and Lenmar.

Johns Manville (JM) is a manufacturer and marketer of products for building insulation, mechanical insulation, commercial roofing and roof insulation, as well as fibers and nonwovens for commercial, industrial and residential applications. JM serves markets that include aerospace, automotive and transportation, air handling, appliance, HVAC, pipe insulation, filtration, waterproofing, building, flooring, interiors and wind energy. The Shaw Industries Group, Inc. (Shaw) is a carpet manufacturer based on both revenue and volume of production. Shaw designs and manufactures over 3,000 styles of tufted carpet, tufted and woven rugs, laminate and wood flooring for residential and commercial use under about 30 brand and trade names and under certain private labels. Shaw also provides installation services and sells ceramic and vinyl tile along with sheet vinyl. Forest River, Inc. Mortgage Insurance

    Never let it be said I didn't follow up on my prior ideas and commentaries. In November of last year I said MGIC Investment Corp. (NYSE:MTG), Radian Group Inc. (NYSE:RDN), and Genworth Financial Inc. (NYSE:GNW) were budding bullish idea.

    For those of you with good memories, you'll likely know why that sounds a little bit "off." Though GNW, MTG, and RDN had all three been quite bullish that particular day as well as flashed bursts of bullishness in the days leading up to that November 1st look, the market was still more than a little pessimistic on on insurers like Radian Group, MGIC Investment, and Genworth Financial. I'm sure glad I was willing to go out on a limb. All three stocks have gone on to make big - and surprising - gains.

    So do I come here to pound my chest on RDN, GNW, and MTG? Nope - not at all. I'm chiming in again today to let you know if you got in on my advice, it's now time to lock in those gains and get out.

    Just so there's no confusion, I don't see any particular overbearing problems hanging over the industry's head. It's just that these stocks have outlived their usefulness and opportunity for us.

    Take MGIC Investment Corp. for instance. MTG has advances 340% since then, yet still isn't profitable on a net trailing basis. Positive earnings are sill in the cards. But, priced at 27.6 times 2014's projected income, the value argument is gone, as well as the technical one.

    Ditto for Genworth Financial and Radian Group Inc. Both stocks have posted huge gains over the past ten months, and while their forward-looking ratios are more attractive, after a 118% and 200% runup, respectively - given the back stories and timing - you have to believe the best-case scenario has already been priced into RDN and GNW shares.

    Just for the record, I would be more than willing to buy back into any and all of these names once we get a healthy pullback and start to see decent evidence of a bullish reversal. While we

Invesco offers a new twist on risk parity

Invesco Ltd. has opened up a new fund to financial advisers that takes its balanced-risk strategy and adds a tactical flair.

The Invesco Global Markets Strategy Fund (GMSDX) launched last September but was only made available to non-accredited investors this month. The fund is managed by the same portfolio management team as the $12.7 billion Invesco Balanced-Risk Allocation Fund (ABRZX).

The Balanced-Risk Allocation Fund is a flavor of risk parity, an increasingly popular alternative to the classic 60/40 portfolio of stocks and bonds.

Risk parity operates under the notion that in a classic portfolio stocks take up way more of the risk than their allocation, so the allocation to stocks is lowered and less risky assets such as bonds and commodities get a higher weighting. The historically less risky asset classes are then boosted by leverage to try and match the same returns as a 60/40 portfolio, with less overall risk.

The Global Markets Strategy Fund starts with the same basic notion but has more freedom to maneuver between asset classes.

Its goal is to derive about 80% of returns from tactical bets and 20% from asset allocation, which is the reverse of the balanced-risk allocation fund, portfolio manager Scott Wolle said.

It can even go short if the outlook for a particular asset class, such as bonds, is grim.

“It can be better positioned within global markets if we have a large number of assets falling,” Mr. Wolle said.

The increased flexibility has paid off this year for the Global Markets Strategy Fund.

In the second quarter, when interest rates skyrocketed from 1.6% to about 2.5%, the balanced-risk allocation fund, which is long-only and has at least 16% of risk coming from bonds, lost more than 5%,

Is Deltathree (DDDC) the Next MagicJack or Vontage? CALL & VG

Many investors or consumers alike are probably familiar with VoIP stocks magicJack VocalTec Ltd (NASDAQ: CALL) and Vonage Holdings Corp (NYSE: VG), but small cap VoIP stock Deltathree, Inc (OTCMKTS: DDDC) has surged more than 700% over the past two trading days. That's pretty extraordinary, but what is the whole story about Deltathree and could it be more compelling than other VoIP stocks like magicJack VocalTec Ltd and Vonage Holdings Corp?

Why is Deltathree Surging?

On Friday, Deltathree surged 277.8% to $0.068 and on Monday, it surged 120.59% to $0.150 for a market cap of $10.84 million. The only explanation I can come up with for Deltathree surging is a Bloomberg story entitled: "Waze Deal Primes Israel's Silicon Wadi for Wave of Investment." The article talks about the recently announced Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) acquisition of mobile map developer Waze Inc. which marked one of the most "lucrative outcomes" for an Israeli technology startup as it was bought for about $1.1 billion. Waze was founded in 2008 by Ehud Shabtai, Amir Shinar and Uri Levine and in 2009, they hired Noam Bardin, an Israeli serial entrepreneur, as CEO plus they raised $12 million from venture capitalists.

The article later mentioned:

Bardin, who previously ran online-video startup Intercast Networks and co-founded online-calling service Deltathree Inc. (DDDC), has increased his presence in the Israeli startup scene in recent years, speaking at conferences and appearing at technology-industry events.

What's the Whole Story With Deltathree?

Investors should be aware that Deltathree has been around for some time. In fact, it even has a Wikipedia page summarizing its history as the company was founded before the dot.com bubble way back in 1996. A year later, RSL Communications, an investment firm owned by Ronald Lauder (as in the son of Estée Lauder), acquired a majority stake in Deltathree which listed on the NASDAQ in November 1999. In 2001, RSL Communications sold its stake in the company to billionaire entrepreneur Yitzhak Tshuva who later sold his shares at a profit. However, Deltathree was delisted by NASDAQ in March 2008 after falling below the $1 level and after reporting a $5.2 million quarterly loss.

In 2009, it was reported that Deltathree had sold a majority stake (54.3%) to Australian company D4 Holdings for $1.17 million in cash. The owners of D4 Holdings also happened to be the owners of privately held ACN - a large international direct seller of telecommunications services, targeting consumers and small businesses around the world. Interestingly enough though, the article noted that under the agreement, D4 also had the right to pick up an additional 30 million shares at 4 cents a share for the next ten years.

Otherwise, investors should be aware that Deltathree has reported revenues of $13.68M (2012), $10.54M (2011), $14.20M (2010) and $19.00M (2009) along with new losses of $1.58M (2012), $3.05M (2011), $2.50M (2010) and $3.20M (2009) for the past four years according to Google Finance data. At the end of the first quarter, Deltathree reported $0.17M in cash and $0.68M in receivables to cover $4.26M in current liabilities plus $2.63M in long-term debt.

In other words, Deltathree is still not profitable in a crowded field that includes magicJack VocalTec Ltd and Vonage Holdings Corp. and it does not exactly have a lot of cash on hand either.

Share Performance: VoIP Stocks DDDC, CALL & VG

Small cap Deltathree is up 650% since the start of the year, up 275% over the past year and up 15.4% over the past five years. In comparison, magicJack VocalTec Ltd is down 15.3% since the start of the year, down 24.8% over the past year and up 1,140.8% over the past five years while Vonage Holdings Corp is up 38.7% since the start of the year, up 67.9% over the past year and up 99.4% over the past five years.

The Bottom Line. I'd be a little cautious about getting into small cap VoIP stock Deltathree with a long-term time horizon, but certainly there are a few traders who have come out big winners over the past few days.

How Investors Can Unlock the Power of Profit Margins

Running a business is all about making a profit, so it makes sense that one of the best measures of a company's performance is its profit margins.

Strong profit margins almost always mean a company is well-run, stable, and making money.

A company with healthy profit margins indicates it is efficient at allocating capital and controlling costs, so it can deliver more revenue to the bottom line.

It also means the business has built-in safety. Therefore, a sales slump is less likely to cause an operating loss.

And if a company can maintain strong profit margins year after year against competitors in the same industry, that's as good as it gets.

For investors, what all this means is that finding the companies with the best profit margins is a great way to identify promising stocks.

Let's dig into this topic a bit deeper so you know just what you need to look for.

High Sales Don't Always Equal the Best Profit Margins

Let's start with a simple definition. Simply put, the profit margin is the amount of money a company earns from each dollar of sales, usually expressed as a ratio, or percentage.

And be sure not to confuse sales and earnings with profits. That can get you into trouble, because if sales and earnings are growing while profit margins are thin or nonexistent, the company could be getting ready to fold its tent.

The reason profit margins matter so much is because they reveal how much money management is squeezing from total sales.

Profit margins are also great for comparing the profitability of different companies - something not possible with sales and earnings figures.

What's more, measuring profit margins from one year to the next can determine if the company has gained or lost ground against its competitors or weathered a difficult economic period.

If a company can maintain the same margins from one year to the next in spite of adverse conditions, it's an indication the company is here to stay. But watch out if the company has lost ground.

Great businesses often have lengthy track records of consistent profit margins and tend to have strong pricing power for their products, making their goods more attractive.

How to Interpret Today's Profit Margins

Right now, optimism on Main Street is high.

Investors poured $57.6 billion into stock funds and exchange-traded funds in July as the market hit new all-time highs, according to Lipper.

But while revenue growth has been strong in 2013, profit margins have only improved slightly.

The fact is, companies have spent the last five years squeezing out extra earnings with aggressive cost-cutting and productivity gains. That means few opportunities remain for easy earnings gains through cost-cutting strategies.

Meanwhile, Wall Street projections are flashing a warning sign for investors...

According to a recent analysis in Barron's, consensus estimate on Wall Street assumes earnings will more than double, to 10.5%, in the fourth quarter - but fourth-quarter sales are expected to grow only 0.6%.

"Where's that margin growth going to come from? More layoffs? Productivity gains? Most of us aren't exactly napping on the job as it is...forecasts look very optimistic," Howard Silverblatt, chief index analyst at S&P, told Barron's.

In other words, overall margins are shrinking right now, making the market pricey.  

This is especially true for a couple of sectors, like the consumer discretionary and telecom sectors, as Barron's pointed out. The technology and healthcare sectors appear to be on safer ground.

There are a couple things investors can do to find companies with the best sustainable profit margins.

Investors should first calculate a firm's after-tax profit margin by dividing its net income by sales.

Do the same for the firm's competitors, and look for companies with the best profit-to-sales ratios in that industry. Margins should be rising quarter after quarter and year over year.

Play Three of the Best Profit Margins

By way of example, let's take a look at three solid companies with some of the best profit margins in their sectors:

By the very nature of their business, financials tend to have wide profit margins, and Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) is no exception. The fourth-largest bank in the country in terms of assets, with outstanding customer service and a strong brand, WFC has a current profit margin of 25.5%. WFC offers a broad range of banking services, including retail banking, asset management, and retirement planning. WFC carries a market cap of $219 billion and a price/earnings (P/E) ratio of 11.3; the overall return for the past 52 weeks is 20.5%. Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) holds an 80% share of the world's microprocessor market, giving them a moat as wide as any brand on the planet. Intel invested $12 billion in research and development last year, far more than any of its competitors. Even though it briefly lost its technology edge in the smartphone and tablet market, its Atom processors are becoming much more competitive. This should achieve more design wins and give Intel pricing power. Even though the stock is off 11% in the last year, its sheer scale and profit margins of 18.1% make Intel a sleeping giant that's about to wake up. Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) has a coveted gatekeeper's role in the financial services marketplace, with the bulk of its revenue coming from transaction fees. As e-commerce and mobile payments continue to grow, Visa and counterpart MasterCard Inc. (NYSE: MA) are in the catbird seat. Visa sports a fat profit margin of 47.2%, and the stock has more than doubled over the past five years.  Earnings are projected to increase by 19.6% per year over the next five years. With a presence in virtually every country on the planet and the explosion of e-commerce payments, Visa is a great way to tap into a business with unlimited growth opportunities.

Qihoo 360: China’s Internet Darling du Jour

Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd. (NYSE: QIHU) on Monday morning reported adjusted earnings per American Depositary Share (ADS) of $0.40 on revenues of $151. 67 million for its second fiscal quarter ended on June 30. The numbers are well above consensus estimates.

Over the past 12 months, shares of Qihoo 360 are up more than 200%, compared with gains of about 46% at Sina Corp. (NASDAQ: SINA) and about 20% at Baidu Inc. (NASDAQ: BIDU), two other booming Chinese Internet players.

These companies do not exactly compete head-to-head in the vast Chinese market. Baidu is primarily a search provider, and Sina's Weibo is the country's answer to Twitter. Sina is also the country's leading Web portal. Qihoo 360, in addition to taking a serious run at Baidu's search business, offers a browser and Web security tools. All three depend on advertising for the largest of their revenues.

Qihoo 360, Sina and Baidu easily topped analysts estimates for second-quarter earnings and revenue, and Qihoo 360 this morning issued an outlook that estimates revenue at $181 million to $183 million in the third quarter, while the consensus estimate is around $163 million.

As in the United States, the major Chinese Web companies are focusing on gaining a leading position in the mobile market. It is here that Qihoo 360 may hold an edge. The company already derives about 40% of its revenues from services, including online gaming, and in its quarterly report noted "strong momentum" in its mobile games.

Add to that a rumored attempt to acquire Sohu.com Inc. (NASDAQ: SOHU), a Baidu competitor, that currently gets about a quarter of China's search market. The deal fell through, but in today's earnings report the company said that it plans to continue to invest in "product and technology development … particularly in mobile Internet and search technology where we see tremendous opportunity for future expansion."

Shares of Qihoo 360 are up 12.3% in premarket trading at $82.00, well above the 52-week range of $20.01 to $76.00. Analysts have not been paying attention apparently. The consensus target price according to Thomson Reuters is just $53.20, a price the stock put in the rear-view mirror more than a month ago.

Why Investors Dread Yet Another Debt Ceiling Fight

A U.S. debt ceiling debate is once again on Congress' agenda. Congress has about three weeks to pass a budget, and the White House has said that U.S. President Barack Obama will not negotiate over raising the 2013 debt ceiling provisions.

We've seen this script before on debt ceiling deadlines, and with so many other pressing issues. Congress will again kick the can down the road.

Before that, a brewing showdown will again unfold, one with distinct consequences for other forms of legislation and the country.

Republicans will likely display the debt ceiling talks to voice opposition to other parts of the Obama agenda. According to policy experts, 80 GOP members of the House have said they will only support a budget resolution that defunds Obamacare.

With this year's IRS mishaps, the revelations of the National Security Agency spying program, and Congressional approval hovering at near lows, the debt ceiling is creating a cloud of uncertainty that could leave Washington in complete disarray...

U.S. Debt Ceiling: A Game of Chicken

Congress has raised the debt ceiling - which refers to the amount of money the country can borrow - on 78 occasions since 1960, with 49 increases happening under Republican presidents and 29 under Democratic presidents, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

The United States hit its $16.7 trillion borrowing ceiling in May 2013; however, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has used a number of tricks to delay the official date that the government is unable to meet its financial obligations.

That date, which now is arbitrary and somewhat dangerous given so, will hit in mid-October to coincide with the looming Congressional showdown.

That showdown, however, is part of a very crowded political calendar that will likely require some maneuvering on both sides.

Even though Lew and President Obama have vowed not to negotiate, the legislative body has several critical votes on the docket. For example, Congress is expected to debate immigration reform at a time when it was expected to be the sole big-ticket item on the fall schedule.

Now that there are other issues, the debt ceiling debate has more ammo for both sides - and this is contributing to a perfect storm for the markets...

What Would Happen in a Government Shutdown?

Many argue that a government shutdown would immediately lead to a U.S. default on its obligations. It would mark the first time in the U.S. government's history that it has not paid its debts.

As a result, it would dramatically raise interest rates, require immediate cuts to government budgets, and sack the value of government bonds owned around the world. In addition, the United States would slash or halt government-issued income streams like Social Security, Medicare reimbursements, and military salaries.

"Operating the government with no borrowing authority, and with only the cash on hand on a given day, would place the United States in an unacceptable position," Jack Lew wrote in a letter to Republican House Speaker John Boehner.

The financial impact is obvious. But additional market factors like Syria and the U.S. Federal Reserve's desire to taper its $85-billion-a-month bond-purchasing program are creating the markets' "perfect storm."

Rising interest rates could lead to catastrophic damage as the United States must service higher interest payments. These payments provide no value to the economy and only act as a drain on production and savings.

Moving forward, the economy will likely remain in a holding pattern as Congress focuses on Syria first and investors await a critical announcement by the Fed on tapering its quantitative easing (QE) bond-buying program come Sept. 18.

I like gadgets because they help us to have a more comfortable daily life. Gadgets are available to all industries and aspects of life. Here, I will look in to the navigation sector through Garmin (GRMN) and Trimble Navigation (TRMB).

Leading Cannibalization

Handheld and fix mounted global positioning systems designer, developer, manufacturer and marketer Garmin serves the aviation, marine, automotive, cellular, OEM and recreation industries worldwide. Recent news about the firm focuses on the introduction of new products, its impressive positive effect on performance and skyrocketing stock price.

Garmin's recent performance displayed growth in 4 out of 5 segments in a year-over-year basis. However, it is expected that personal navigation devices will be cannibalized by the introduction of navigating systems in smartphones and in-dashboard navigation for automobiles. But higher margins are concentrated in the fitness and outdoor segments, which are responsible for the recent growth. It is worth noting the recent growth is in line with the firm´s seasonal growth, and no out-of-the-ordinary catalyst is responsible for such performance. Hence, short-term growth is thought to be close to exhaustion.

The long-term strategy for Garmin has not changed: serve underexploited markets at a premium price until competitors arrive, and concentrate efforts in niche markets raising natural barriers. A segment with high returns for the firm is the outdoor and fitness segment, while its most profitable niche is located in the aviation segment. At the same time, the company has successfully differentiated itself from the competition through a friendly interface, and worldwide reach assured great international exposure and customer loyalty. Hence, so long as there are underserved markets and niches with global reach, future profitability is available even with cannibalization in other segments.

The balance sheet for Garmin is very strong. Cash flow continues to increase and no debt has be! en issued. Currently trading at 15.8 times its earnings, a 46% discount to the industry, the stock is undervalued. I do not share Joel Greenblatt and Jim Simons' pessimism, because the products offered are much superior to many handheld devices, some of which continue to run a pirated version of the company's software.

Weather and Legislation

Aiding field and mobile workers to improve productivity, Trimble offers a gamut of global positioning systems receivers, laser rangefinders, and inertial navigation systems for several industries. Additionally, the firm provides software and wireless technologies solutions, catering to customer specific needs. The latest news about the firm announced the release of software data integration capabilities.

Trimble's last quarterly report has met consensus estimates, aided by a U.S. construction market uptrend, growing technology demand from the agricultural market, and recent acquisitions in the mobile sector. Also, merchandise enhancements, improved cost structure, a more profitable share of software and license revenues and international expansion continue to push growth in the short term. However, long-term outlook does not look as good due to U.S. government regulation and weather conditions.

Trimble's agricultural division has been hit by adverse conditions during the planting season: slow activity in the agricultural segment, especially affecting geographic information systems. At the same time, the Sequester has negatively affected performance, but is not expected to continue doing so. Also, the commercial segment suffered from small fleet extensions, while the engineering and construction segment slowly recover together with the U.S. construction industry, cost-efficient policies have been curtailed by the entrance to emerging markets with low-margin products, and competition continues to grow.

Finances for Trimble are moderate. The stock is currently trading at 35.8 times its earnings, or a 31% premium to the industry! average.! In this case I disagree with Jim Simons again, and those who followed his lead like Steven Cohen and Ray Dalio's recent entrance.

Final Thoughts

I remember the first time dad gave me a Garmin navigator. He knew no English and could not understand instructions. So, I have a special feeling for the company. Emotions aside, I believe both companies offer great opportunities for growth in the long term. Both companies offer great products and have been able to differentiate from the competition, carving a competitive niche for each other.
