Top 5 Forestry Companies To Invest In Right Now

Facebook and Google are spending billions of dollars to ensure that they remain relevant in the rapidly changing technology landscape.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Facebook and Google are locked in a high-stakes, multi-billion dollar battle to shape the future.

Both companies are spending like crazy on emerging technologies. Their aims: when their current businesses are disrupted -- and they will be -- they'll have a fallback plan.

"While Facebook is doing well now, it knows that its core business could degrade just as MySpace's did," said Carl Howe, analyst at Yankee Group.

That's why Facebook (FB, Fortune 500) has poured billions of dollars into a photo sharing network, facial recognition software, a chat app and now virtual reality company Oculus. Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), in turn, has invested billions in driverless cars, wearable gadgets, military robots and -- most recently through its purchase of Nest -- connected home devices like smoke detectors and thermostats.

Advisors' Opinion:

    3. Oasis Petroleum (NYSE: OAS  )
By aggressively developing its Bakken acreage, Oasis was able to grow its oil production by 102% last year. The company plans to continue to grow Bakken oil production in the year ahead, with a budget to spend $897 million to drill 105.8 net wells. Even better, the company is becoming much more efficient with its capital as it continues to drill the play. Last year it needed to spend just over $1 billion to drill the same number of wells as it plans to drill in the year ahead.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Continental isn't alone in its pursuit of the Bakken. Peers like Oasis Petroleum (NYSE: OAS  ) are also aggressively drilling in the region. Oasis has grown its oil production by 71% year over year and sees the potential for significant future upside as it drills on its current acreage over the next 14 years. Production growth at Oasis has been truly remarkable. In the first quarter of 2010, the company was producing just over 3,000 boe/d, but by the end of this year it expects to produce an average of 34,000 boe/d. That's a tenfold increase and certainly reason for OPEC to be concerned.

  • [By Value Digger]

    C) Oasis Petroleum (OAS) is another one-basin energy play that is solely dependent on the Williston basin. Although the company's D/CF ratio (annualized) is 2.73x, Oasis trades at $152,400/boepd and $29.31/boe of proved reserves, based on its current EV of $4.2 billion and production of 27,556 boepd (89% oil).

Advisors' Opinion:

    Partnership outlook
I am still hoping that Codexis will be tapped by Raizen, a joint venture between Shell and sugar giant Cosan (NYSE: CZZ  ) , as its exclusive cellulase enzyme provider. Raizen has not been shy about its cellulosic ethanol ambitions -- planning a 10 million gallon per year facility -- but has yet to choose an enzyme technology. Investors should be careful not to assume that Codexis is a lock for the partnership (Raizen is the largest investor in Codexis), but with more than 580 million gallons of first-generation ethanol capacity the opportunity is enormous.

ADM's renewable-fuel business grabs most of the attention from investors. The drought has also had a big impact in this segment as well, as ADM has had to idle ethanol production facilities because of low corn supplies following the drought. Moreover, with sugar-based ethanol competitors Bunge (NYSE: BG  ) and Cosan (NYSE: CZZ  ) already benefiting from pricing disparities between sugar and corn, prospects of potential tariffs on U.S. ethanol in Europe could give Brazilian sugar-based ethanol a competitive advantage, further hurting ADM.

Advisors' Opinion:

One big benefit and a potentially huge problem
There is a chance this move could have benefits to the insurance sector and health-benefit providers like WellPoint (NYSE: WLP  ) in that it gives businesses an extra year to figure out how to operate with a part-time labor force and exempt themselves from the penalties that could be associated with needing to offer health insurance and subsidizing their employees. If medium-to-large businesses choose to reduce hours, it could cause employees in increasing number to seek out insurance plans on the state-run exchanges, ultimately validating the effectiveness of Obamacare and making WellPoint -- which purchased AMERIGROUP last year to expand its individual market Medicaid-based member group -- look like a genius.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Still, UnitedHealth faces substantial competition. With Medicaid likely to become a much larger part of its business under Obamacare, WellPoint (NYSE: WLP  ) will become its most formidable rival because of its aggressive acquisition of Amerigroup in 2012 to help it bolster its Medicaid business. WellPoint also has a higher medical loss ratio than UnitedHealth, giving it more flexibility to add new customers without having to offer premium rebates to policyholders.

  • [By Daniel Jennings]

The White House was planning a massive Obamacare marketing effort with the help of unions and nonprofit groups. That effort has apparently been put on the backburner.
The Obamacare news didn't help UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH). Its share price fell by .017 percent in mid-day trading on Wednesday. Yet it seemed to help WellPoint (NYSE: WLP). The operator of the Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans saw its share price rise by .01% on Wednesday . A smaller operator of healthcare plans, Molina Healthcare (NYSE: MOH) saw its share price fall.

  • [By Keith Speights]

The reaction to the online marketplaces from some large insurers has been less than enthusiastic. UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH  ) CEO Stephen Hemsley indicated that his company would move forward somewhat cautiously. WellPoint (NYSE: WLP  ) also stated that it would only participate in 14 state exchanges initially.
